Apple of Sodom, known locally as شجرة العشار or شجرة العشر, is a hardy desert shrub/tree native to the Arabian Peninsula. It is recognized for its thick, gray-green leaves, clusters of waxy purple and white star-shaped flowers, and its round, balloon-like fruits that burst open to release silky seeds.

This plant is extremely heat-tolerant, drought-resistant, and salt-tolerant, making it one of the UAE’s most resilient native desert species. It thrives naturally in open deserts, sandy soils, road edges, and coastal dry areas.

Apple of Sodom is often used in native landscaping, sustainable desert gardens, and ecological restoration projects because it requires minimal water and maintenance. Its flowers attract butterflies and desert pollinators, contributing to the natural ecosystem.

Important note: Its milky latex sap is toxic if ingested and may irritate the skin, so it should be handled with care.
